Where Do I Begin? What Do I Need in a Basic Sewing Kit?

Writer's picture: margoduffmargoduff

As a beginner to sewing and quilting, you may find that this is an expensive hobby. It can be but you don't have to break the bank! What do you really need to begin? Let me suggest the basic supplies and a few tips to save money as you build up your sewing supplies.

A great start includes:

* sewing machine

* tape measure

* pin cushion

* pins (glass head)

* small ruler

* hand needles

* small clippers/scissors

* seam ripper

* shears (for fabric only)

* scissors (for paper patterns)

If you are beginning quilting, a rotary cutter, ruler and large mat is a great investment.

There are so many ways to save money! For example: the Michaels Store's app has coupons and are a great way to save 40% to 50% off the more expensive items, such as shears, rotary cutters and mats. Princess Auto (yes) sell cutting mats and they are often on sale in their flyer.

Another idea is to canvas your family members. Do they have a sewing machine or sewing basket tucked away that is no longer used? Perhaps they wouldn't mind lending you the items as you start your new hobby. Second-hand shops have a craft section and I have found some super finds! The dollar stores do carry supplies, but not all the items are great quality. Things like tape measures, paper scissors and hand needles are perfect to pick up there. The thread is not worth buying!

Sewing machines certainly range in price. Facebook Marketplace often has machines for sale and a super way to save money. A newer model is best and prices vary. A portable one or in a cabinet are both options to consider. A light-weight portable machine is super for joining us at a workshop! Local department stores has options. As well as our local Saint John Sewing Centre on Elliot Row has both used and new machines. They also offer repair and tune ups. Remember you can always upgrade if you enjoy your new hobby.
